Two critically injured after Piper crashes near Dawson County airfield

DAWSON COUNTY, Ga. — A Sunday flight near a small north Georgia airfield ended in trees and a multi-agency response.

Atlanta News First reported that a small plane crashed Sunday near an airfield in Dawson County. The Dawson County Sheriff’s Office said it responded to reports of a possible downed aircraft around noontime. The crash site was described as just off Highway 183 near Elliott Field.

The National Transportation Safety Board identified the aircraft as a Piper PA-32-300 that crashed into trees northeast of the airfield, according to the station’s account.

FlightAware data cited by the paper put takeoff at 7:23 a.m. and the return landing at 7:59 a.m. — a short airborne window that still left passengers walking off on emergency slides instead of a jet bridge.

ATLANTA — The Federal Aviation Administration is reviewing a close call Monday between two Delta Air Lines flights at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport after an arriving crew aborted its landing when another aircraft was on the runway.

According to Atlanta News First (WANF/CBS 46), Delta Flight 1568 from Pittsburgh to Atlanta executed a go-around after the pilot saw another plane on the runway. Air traffic control audio cited in that report showed a controller telling the pilot the other aircraft would move in time; the arrival crew still went around and ended up about 1,800 feet from Delta Flight 2472, which had just taken off for Rochester, New York.
