The National Weather Service extended a heat advisory across north and central Georgia through 8 p.m. Saturday as heat index values are forecast to climb back into dangerous territory.
Forecasters expect actual air temperatures in the mid-90s combined with high humidity to push feels-like readings past 108 degrees in some areas, including downtown Atlanta and the south metro.
“Hazardous heat is possible, especially for vulnerable populations,” the weather service said. “Stay hydrated, stay in air-conditioned rooms, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.”
The City of Atlanta has all 12 of its neighborhood cooling centers open through at least Sunday. A full list of locations is available on the NotifyATL app or by calling 311. MARTA continues to offer free rides to and from any designated cooling center.
In addition to the heat, the weather service is tracking scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms that could bring brief heavy rain and frequent lightning. The Storm Prediction Center has north Georgia in a marginal risk for severe weather.
Cooler air is expected to arrive Sunday, with highs in the mid-80s and lower humidity. The relief should last through Tuesday before the heat builds again.
