A line of strong thunderstorms rolled through Atlanta and north Georgia on Friday afternoon, producing gusty winds, frequent lightning and pockets of flash flooding across the metro, the National Weather Service and the 11Alive Weather Impact Team reported.
The NWS Hazardous Weather Outlook for the region had flagged scattered thunderstorms capable of producing gusty to locally damaging winds, locally heavy rainfall and frequent lightning through the afternoon and evening hours. By early evening, the strongest cells had moved across the metro and pushed east, but the Weather Impact Team cautioned that additional scattered storms could develop into the overnight period.
What residents saw
Reports from across the metro Friday afternoon described sudden downpours that quickly ponded on roads, reduced visibility for drivers and prompted the usual flash-flooding cautions in low-lying areas. 11Alive’s coverage stressed that even storms that don’t reach severe criteria can produce dangerous conditions on area roadways when they dump rain in a short window.
The storms came on the heels of a mostly sunny morning and a forecast high near 91 degrees for parts of Cobb County, the Cobb Courier reported earlier in the day, reminding residents that summer storm setups in north Georgia can build quickly when warm, humid air is in place.
Weekend outlook
Looking ahead to the weekend, the NWS forecast for Saturday called for mostly cloudy skies across the metro with scattered thunderstorms possible, lows in the low 70s and highs in the upper 70s in some areas, with a southerly wind around 5 to 10 mph. The chance of rain lingers through Sunday before a drier pattern potentially returns early next week.
