Atlanta will see one more day of heat before a cold front brings thunderstorms and cooler temperatures by Tuesday evening.
Monday’s forecast calls for highs in the mid-90s with heat index values around 100 degrees. The National Weather Service has not issued a heat advisory, but city cooling centers remain open.
A cold front pushing in from the northwest will bring scattered thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon and evening. Some of the storms could be strong, with damaging winds and heavy rain the main threats.
By Wednesday, highs will drop into the mid-80s with lower humidity. The relief is expected to last through Friday before the heat builds again in time for the July 4th holiday weekend.
The weather service is also watching a tropical disturbance in the eastern Gulf of Mexico that could bring additional moisture to the region late next week. It’s too early to know whether the system will affect north Georgia, but forecasters say it’s worth watching.
For Monday, residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity in the afternoon, and check on elderly neighbors and relatives.
