A wet weather pattern will keep Atlanta cooler than normal through midweek, with scattered showers and thunderstorms expected each afternoon through Wednesday.
Highs will stay in the low 80s — several degrees below normal for mid-July — before the heat builds back into the low 90s by Friday.
“Heat concerns will take a brief break,” said FOX 5 Atlanta chief meteorologist Joanne Feldman. “But the humidity stays high, so it will still feel pretty muggy.”
The Storm Prediction Center has north Georgia in a marginal risk for severe weather on Monday and Tuesday, with damaging winds and frequent lightning the main threats. Heavy rain could also produce localized flooding in low-lying areas.
The cool spell will be a welcome break for residents who have endured nearly two weeks of heat advisories and feels-like temperatures above 100 degrees. All 12 of Atlanta’s neighborhood cooling centers will remain open through Wednesday.
The weather is expected to be cooperative for the MLB All-Star Game at Truist Park on Tuesday evening, with only a slight chance of a passing shower during the game. First pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m.
By Friday, highs are forecast to return to the low 90s with heat index values back above 95 degrees.
