ATLANTA — If your weekend route still assumes a free-flowing westside Perimeter, rewrite it.
Atlanta News First reporter Justin Berger reported early Saturday, Aug. 15, that a portion of I-285 on Atlanta’s westside is closed this weekend as part of a $206 million rehabilitation and reconstruction project managed by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT).
What’s closed, and until when
According to ANF’s Saturday update, the closure runs northbound and southbound between Cascade Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Detours begin at I-20 or Langford Parkway, depending on direction. Work is scheduled to conclude at 5 a.m. Monday.
An earlier ANF report on Friday, Aug. 14, put the start of the full-lane shutdown at Friday 7 p.m. for the same Cascade–MLK segment, matching the Monday 5 a.m. reopen target.
Why GDOT is using full weekend closures
GDOT frames the job as rehabilitating or reconstructing about one-third of I-285 over three years, ANF reports — milling and grinding pavement and repairing or replacing concrete slabs. The agency says complete weekend closures cut years off the timeline compared with partial weekday work patterns.
GDOT spokesperson Natalie Dale, quoted by ANF, said weekends give drivers more schedule flexibility than weekday commute peaks and let crews run round-the-clock shifts without the same workweek disruption. Previous closures in the project have faced weather-related delays; ANF’s Saturday piece says crews staged extra water and water trucks this weekend to help with compaction in the heat.
Heat is part of the traffic story
The same weekend sits under a multi-day heat advisory for north Georgia. ANF’s Friday heat-and-construction package noted triple-digit heat indexes and quoted Marcial Marquez of the Georgia Hispanic Construction Association on job-site heat deaths and the need for free water, shade, and rest breaks. First Alert chief meteorologist Jennifer Valdez urged drivers facing detours to leave with a full tank, working air conditioning, and water — advice that applies whether the delay is construction or a stalled crash on the alternate route.
What this is not
This is not a new beltway alignment or a permanent lane drop. It is a scheduled rebuild window on an aging concrete stretch, with a published reopen target of Monday morning. Until GDOT says otherwise, treat both directions between Cascade and MLK as offline and budget time for I-20 / Langford detours.
