MILWAUKEE — A matchup of first-place starters went the home team’s way on Friday night.
According to the Associated Press recap carried by ESPN, the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Atlanta Braves 2-1 on Friday, Aug. 21, at American Family Field. ESPN lists Atlanta at 75-54 (33-31 away) after the loss and Milwaukee at 80-49 (44-23 home).
Misiorowski blanks Atlanta for six
Jacob Misiorowski (13-5) threw six shutout innings, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out six. The AP says he threw 96 pitches, hit at least 100 mph on 32 of them (top velocity 103.1), and mixed in more sliders than usual.
Misiorowski lowered his ERA to 1.68 and raised his strikeout total to 216. ESPN’s recap says he leads the majors in both categories.
Sale’s line and the third-inning damage
Chris Sale (12-9) scattered eight hits, walked none, and struck out six in six innings. The AP notes the 2024 Cy Young winner has allowed three runs or fewer in an MLB-leading 20 consecutive starts.
Milwaukee scored both runs off Sale in the third:
- Luis Lara and Jackson Chourio opened with consecutive singles (runners on the corners).
- William Contreras drove in Lara with a base hit up the middle.
- Andrew Vaughn hit into a fielder’s choice that scored Chourio.
Contreras and late Braves chances
Contreras finished 4-for-4. Lara went 2-for-3 and, per the AP, made a leaping catch at the center-field wall to rob Matt Olson in the sixth.
Atlanta cut the lead to 2-1 on Michael Harris II’s two-out RBI single in the eighth. Antonio Senzatela then walked Ozzie Albies to load the bases before retiring Mauricio Dubón on a fly to right.
In the ninth, Mike Yastrzemski singled with two outs; pinch runner Lane Thomas stole second before Trevor Megill struck out Ronald Acuña Jr. for his 24th save in 26 chances.
