The Atlanta Hawks re-signed veteran guard CJ McCollum on Friday to a one-year, $21 million contract, locking in the team’s starting backcourt alongside Trae Young for the 2026-27 season.
The deal, first reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania, includes a player option for a second year, sources confirmed to WACN 21. McCollum, 34, averaged 19.3 points and 5.9 assists after being acquired from New Orleans at last year’s trade deadline.
“This is a great fit,” McCollum said in a statement released by the team. “Coach Snyder and his staff have put together a roster that can compete in the East, and I’m excited to be a part of it.”
The Hawks acquired McCollum in a February trade for rookie guard Dyson Daniels and two first-round picks. Daniels has since emerged as a top-tier perimeter defender and is locked into a long-term extension, making the cost of the trade a frequent topic among fans.
“CJ brings playoff experience, leadership, and one of the best midrange games in the league,” Hawks head coach Quin Snyder said. “We’re thrilled to have him back.”
McCollum’s extension is the second significant move of the offseason for Atlanta, which acquired Aaron Wiggins from Oklahoma City on Monday for two future second-round picks. The Hawks are also expected to retain center Jock Landale, with the two sides reportedly working on a one-year agreement worth around $14 million.
Atlanta holds the No. 8 pick in the upcoming NBA Draft and is widely expected to take a guard or wing. The draft is scheduled for July 9-10 in New York.
