The Atlanta Hawks opened their NBA Summer League schedule on Thursday night at the Salt Lake City Summer League with a wire-to-wire 93-66 win over the San Antonio Spurs.
Rookie guard Kingston Flemings, the eighth overall pick in last week’s draft out of Houston, led the Hawks with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including 4-of-7 from three-point range. He added four rebounds and three assists.
“Kingston looked great,” Hawks Summer League head coach Brittney Ezike said. “He was in attack mode from the jump, and that’s what we need from him.”
Second-round pick Henri Veesaar added 14 points and seven rebounds off the bench, and undrafted rookie Asa Briggs chipped in 11 points.
The Hawks led by as many as 27 points in the second half and never trailed. Atlanta’s defense forced 19 Spurs turnovers and held San Antonio to 38 percent shooting.
Atlanta continues Summer League play Friday against the Utah Jazz, with tip-off scheduled for 9 p.m. ET. The team will then travel to Las Vegas for the Las Vegas Summer League, where they will play five games beginning next Wednesday.
The Hawks’ Summer League roster includes Flemings, Veesaar, Briggs, second-year guard Asa Newell, and several other young players competing for minutes in the regular season rotation.
