MINNEAPOLIS — Atlanta’s road trip through Target Field ended the same way the first two nights did: short on timely hits and short of a win.
According to the Associated Press recap carried by ESPN, the Minnesota Twins beat the Atlanta Braves 6-4 on Wednesday, Aug. 19, completing a three-game sweep. ESPN lists Atlanta at 74-53 (32-30 away) after the loss and Minnesota at 63-65 (35-31 home).
Seventh-inning break
With the score tied 4-4, the AP account says Josh Bell doubled off Victor Mederos (2-1) with one out in the seventh. Kody Clemens followed with an RBI single against Dylan Lee, and Brooks Lee singled two batters later to score Clemens.
Clemens finished with three RBI. Kaelen Culpepper added three hits for Minnesota. Yoendrys Gómez earned his third save in as many games and 20th of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth. A.J. Minter (2-2) got the last two outs of the seventh; Jeff Hoffman struck out three in the eighth.
How Atlanta got to 4-4
AJ Smith-Shawver, recalled Tuesday from Triple-A Gwinnett, made his second start of the season for Atlanta. He allowed five hits and four earned runs in 4 1/3 innings, including a two-run double by Clemens as part of a three-run fifth that put Minnesota ahead 4-1.
Atlanta answered in the sixth with three straight singles to open the inning against Kody Funderburk. Each runner scored — the last on a Tommy Nance balk — to tie the game at 4.
Ronald Acuña Jr., Lane Thomas, and Ozzie Albies each drove in a run for Atlanta, per the AP.
Skid context and ejection
The AP package notes the Braves have scored 15 runs while losing five of six, including 4-2 on Monday and 4-1 on Tuesday. Over that stretch they are 8-for-43 with runners in scoring position.
Manager Walt Weiss was ejected for arguing a check swing in the eighth.
Starter notes
Looking for his first win in seven starts, Twins right-hander Taj Bradley allowed two hits and one run over five innings with seven strikeouts. He needed only 16 pitches through two innings, then at least 20 in each of the next three, including 31 in the fifth.
