President Donald Trump landed at Dobbins Air Reserve Base around 1 p.m. Wednesday aboard Air Force One and traveled a short distance to Wheeler High School in Marietta, where he spent the afternoon promoting Trump Accounts — a new federally backed investment program for children — and appearing with Rick Jackson, the Republican nominee for Georgia governor.
The White House announced the visit last week as part of a national rollout of Trump Accounts, an initiative that allows families to open tax-deferred investment accounts for children and contribute up to $5,000 annually. Children born during Trump’s second term are eligible for a $1,000 federal deposit under the program.
The Cobb County school visit is the first Georgia stop on a multi-state push that the administration has framed as a “nest egg for every American child.” Wheeler High, a Cobb County School District campus east of Marietta, hosted the remarks even though summer break is in session.
Jackson and the GOP ticket
Trump used the visit to amplify the Georgia GOP ticket ahead of the fall midterms. Rick Jackson, who won the Republican gubernatorial nomination, appeared with the president at the school.
U.S. Rep. Mike Collins, R-Ga., the GOP’s nominee to face Sen. Jon Ossoff in November, posted on social media that he would not be joining Trump at the event.
Trump is expected to encourage voters to turn out for the GOP ticket in the midterms, and the visit marks one of the highest-profile in-state political events of the summer.
Traffic and security
Three routes between Dobbins and Wheeler High were shut down for the motorcade, which is standard for a presidential visit, according to Atlanta News First. I-75 and several surface streets near both locations saw intermittent closures during the afternoon commute.
The Georgia Department of Transportation postponed a planned I-285 lane closure for the weekend because of the security footprint around the president’s visit, the agency said.
How the program works
Under Trump Accounts, every American child under 18 is eligible for an account, with parents and employers able to contribute up to $5,000 annually on a tax-deferred basis. Children born during Trump’s second term are eligible for a $1,000 federal deposit.
The administration has promoted the program as a complement to 529 college savings plans, with broader investment flexibility. Trump used the Atlanta stop to argue that the accounts will give “every American child a head start in life, a nest egg to grow up with, and a real stake in the country’s future.”
