ATLANTA — Atlanta Track Club wants to build the city’s first dedicated indoor track and field facility at Cheney Stadium, a $100 million proposal that would put a year-round training and community center on Olympic-adjacent ground in Summerhill.

According to FOX 5 Atlanta reporting, the plan calls for roughly 175,000 square feet with a 200-meter hydraulic competition oval, a STEM center for students, a health and wellness center, and flexible community space. Olympians trained at Cheney ahead of the 1996 Summer Games; gold medalist Gail Devers is among the athletes historically tied to the site.

A record 60,000 runners took to the streets of Buckhead and Midtown on Saturday morning for the 57th Peachtree Road Race, the world’s largest 10K and one of Atlanta’s most enduring Independence Day traditions.

The race started under mostly clear skies at Peachtree and Lenox roads at 7:30 a.m., with the field broken into five waves to manage crowding at the start. Runners made their way south through Buckhead and into Midtown before finishing at Piedmont Park, where temperatures were already climbing past 80 degrees by the time the lead pack crossed the line.

Runners streamed into Lenox Square on Thursday afternoon to pick up their race numbers, browse dozens of exhibitor booths, and grab the official 2026 Peachtree Road Race T-shirt at the Peachtree Health & Fitness Expo.

The two-day expo, presented by Publix and organized by the Atlanta Track Club, runs Thursday and Friday in climate-controlled tents in the Macy’s parking lot at Lenox. Saturday’s 57th running of the world’s largest 10K has drawn a record 60,000 registered runners, the club said — about 2,000 more than last year’s race.

MARTA is reminding runners and spectators heading to the 57th Peachtree Road Race on Saturday that the train is the safest and most reliable way to get there.

The transit agency is the official partner of the Northside Hospital Peachtree Road Race and the Peachtree Health & Fitness Expo, which returns to Lenox Square this week after several years at other locations.

The expo runs Thursday through Friday in climate-controlled tents in the Macy’s parking lot at Lenox Square. Runners who did not purchase UPS shipping when they registered will need to pick up their race numbers on-site.
