City Council directs Dickens office to craft extreme heat safety plan

ATLANTA — City Hall is putting a formal heat-safety homework assignment on the mayor’s desk after a summer stretch that left advocates unconvinced Atlanta was ready for prolonged triple-digit feels-like weather.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that City Council unanimously passed a resolution Monday directing Mayor Andre Dickens’ office and partner departments to craft an extreme heat safety plan. Council member Kelsea Bond proposed the measure after a brutal late-June into early-July heat and humidity stretch that pushed feels-like temperatures into the high 90s and low triple digits for more than a week, with little overnight relief.

City opens additional cooling centers as heat returns Tuesday

The City of Atlanta will reopen four additional cooling centers Monday in anticipation of heat index values returning to the upper 90s by Tuesday, Mayor Andre Dickens’ office announced Sunday.

The four centers — located at the Adamsville-Collier Heights, Center Hill, Old Fourth Ward, and Southeast Atlanta neighborhood centers — will join the eight centers already open. Together, they will offer relief to residents across all 12 of the city’s neighborhoods.

Heat advisory in effect across metro Atlanta through Tuesday as heat index tops 100

Metro Atlanta is under a heat advisory for a second straight day as the National Weather Service office in Peachtree City extended the warning through 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The advisory covers an area of Georgia stretching from Dalton and Rome in the north down through Athens, Atlanta, Newnan, Columbus, Macon and Dublin. Forecasters are calling for highs of 94 to 97 degrees and heat index values of at least 100 degrees each afternoon through the July 4th holiday weekend.
