Flood Watch Expands Into Metro Atlanta Through Friday Evening

A flood watch now includes Atlanta and a broad stretch of metro and north Georgia through Friday evening as repeated storms move along a stalled front.

The National Weather Service in Peachtree City expanded the watch Friday morning to include Cobb, DeKalb, Douglas, Gwinnett, North Fulton, South Fulton, Rockdale and several neighboring counties. Atlanta, Marietta, Decatur, Lawrenceville and East Point are among the cities named in the watch.

The watch remains in effect through Friday evening. It means flooding is possible, not that every location will flood.

The National Weather Service office in Peachtree City issued a Heat Advisory covering most of metro Atlanta and eastern Georgia from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with afternoon heat index values forecast between 105 and 108 degrees.

The advisory comes after a Monday that already pushed heat index readings to 100-plus across north Georgia. Tuesday’s advisory covers Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, Gwinnett, Clayton, Henry, Fayette, Rockdale, Douglas, Cherokee, Forsyth, Hall, and Paulding counties, along with most of east-central Georgia east of I-20.

Strong storms, flash flooding roll through north Georgia Friday afternoon

A line of strong thunderstorms rolled through Atlanta and north Georgia on Friday afternoon, producing gusty winds, frequent lightning and pockets of flash flooding across the metro, the National Weather Service and the 11Alive Weather Impact Team reported.

The NWS Hazardous Weather Outlook for the region had flagged scattered thunderstorms capable of producing gusty to locally damaging winds, locally heavy rainfall and frequent lightning through the afternoon and evening hours. By early evening, the strongest cells had moved across the metro and pushed east, but the Weather Impact Team cautioned that additional scattered storms could develop into the overnight period.

Heat advisory extended through Saturday as heat index tops 108 again

The National Weather Service extended a heat advisory across north and central Georgia through 8 p.m. Saturday as heat index values are forecast to climb back into dangerous territory.

Forecasters expect actual air temperatures in the mid-90s combined with high humidity to push feels-like readings past 108 degrees in some areas, including downtown Atlanta and the south metro.

“Hazardous heat is possible, especially for vulnerable populations,” the weather service said. “Stay hydrated, stay in air-conditioned rooms, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.”

Extreme heat warning issued for Thursday as heat index could reach 110

The National Weather Service has upgraded Thursday’s heat advisory to an extreme heat warning for parts of metro Atlanta, with heat index values forecast to hit 108 to 111 degrees in some areas from noon through 8 p.m.

The warning covers most of north and central Georgia, including Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, Gwinnett, Clayton and Henry counties. Forecasters are calling for actual air temperatures in the upper 90s combined with high humidity to push the feels-like reading past 110 in the hottest spots, including downtown Atlanta and the south metro.

Metro Atlanta is under a heat advisory for a second straight day as the National Weather Service office in Peachtree City extended the warning through 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The advisory covers an area of Georgia stretching from Dalton and Rome in the north down through Athens, Atlanta, Newnan, Columbus, Macon and Dublin. Forecasters are calling for highs of 94 to 97 degrees and heat index values of at least 100 degrees each afternoon through the July 4th holiday weekend.
