City finalizes Summerhill Red Bull Showrun permits for Saturday

ATLANTA — Formula 1 and off-road exhibition cars are cleared to run Hank Aaron Drive on Saturday after the city finalized assembly and outdoor-festival permits for the Red Bull Showrun in Summerhill.

Atlanta News First reported late Thursday that both permits were signed July 29 by Atlanta Chief of Staff Courtney English and recommended by Ebony Barley, the city’s director of special events. The outdoor festival application was amended at least eight times before approval. City estimates put attendance just under 50,000. Admission is free.

An updated detour notice from MARTA, quoted in that coverage, said road-closure revisions for the Showrun forced a change to the Rapid A-Line path for the full multi-day window.

According to FOX 5 Atlanta reporting, the plan calls for roughly 175,000 square feet with a 200-meter hydraulic competition oval, a STEM center for students, a health and wellness center, and flexible community space. Summerhill residents and business owners are organizing Sunday to oppose a plan to relocate Atlanta’s 1996 Olympic cauldron from the neighborhood to Centennial Olympic Park, arguing that the monument is inseparable from the place it has marked for three decades.

The rally is scheduled for 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday, July 19, at the Summerhill Neighborhood Development Corporation House. Organizers have also circulated an online petition that had collected nearly 2,000 signatures by Sunday morning, according to Atlanta News First.
