The annual Lenox Square fireworks show lit up the Buckhead skyline Saturday night, drawing an estimated 100,000 people to the area for the 25-minute Independence Day display.
Spectators lined both sides of Peachtree Road for blocks in either direction of the mall, with crowds particularly dense around the intersection of Peachtree and Lenox roads. Many brought blankets and lawn chairs, setting up as early as 6 p.m. to claim a good vantage point.
The show began promptly at 9:30 p.m. with a choreographed display set to a soundtrack of patriotic music mixed with contemporary pop hits. The finale lit up the skyline for nearly a full minute.
“It was spectacular,” said Sandy Springs resident Mary Lou Jackson, who has been coming to the Lenox show for more than a decade. “Every year it gets better. They really know how to put on a show.”
The show was sponsored by Simon Property Group, which owns Lenox Square. Mall management provided free parking at the Lenox garage and complimentary bottles of water to anyone who walked past the information table.
Atlanta Police had officers stationed at every major intersection along Peachtree Road between Lenox and Peachtree Dunwoody Road. MARTA ran extra trains on the Gold Line after the show to handle the post-event rush.
The downtown show at Centennial Olympic Park followed at 9:45 p.m. and was visible from many parts of Midtown.
Other fireworks displays across the metro area included Stone Mountain’s “Fantastic Fourth” celebration, which featured a laser show and a fireworks finale, and the city of Marietta’s annual show at Marietta Square.
