ANF reports a Heat Advisory in effect from noon to 8 p.m. Friday for central and most of north Georgia, with afternoon highs in the mid-to-upper 90s and heat index values soaring into the low 100s across most of the region. Mountain zones may run a touch lower but still well above seasonal normals, per that forecast package.
NWS Atlanta’s public briefing language on weather.gov/ffc is blunt: as dangerous heat builds, heat index values can rise into the 100–108 degree range, with a heat advisory in effect for the afternoon window. The office’s standing guidance is the same set riders and outdoor workers already know by heart — fluids, air conditioning, limited sun exposure, and checks on neighbors and relatives who may not have cooling.
Afternoon thunderstorms remain part of the package. ANF’s Friday forecast calls for isolated to scattered storms mainly between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. Most will be weak, the desk notes, but a few can produce gusty winds and locally heavy rain. That is a classic late-summer Georgia pattern: oppressive humidity that both elevates the heat index and primes pop-up storms, not a clean “dry heat” day.
Looking ahead, ANF says the intense heat persists into the weekend and early next week, with heat indexes remaining over 100 degrees across most of the area Saturday and Sunday and additional advisories likely where values exceed 105. NWS Atlanta’s multi-day outlook has been tracking the same ridge: mid-to-upper 90s air temperatures through the weekend and heat indexes approaching or reaching triple digits for a stretch of mid-to-late week outdoor planning.
Practical framing for metro Atlanta:
- Shift heavy outdoor work earlier or later than the advisory core hours when possible.
- Treat youth sports, festival lines, and job sites with mandatory water and shade breaks as non-negotiable, not optional hospitality.
- Remember that “partly cloudy with a storm chance” does not cancel heat risk between cells.
This is not a novelty cold-front story and not a severe-weather outbreak. It is the slower public-health weather problem: heat that stacks day after day while schools, transit, construction, and weekend events keep moving. The advisory is the official reminder; the forecast desks are saying the pattern does not break cleanly overnight.
