ATLANTA — The weekend heat advisory did not expire cleanly. Monday is another official heat day — with a north Georgia storm wrinkle layered on top.

The National Weather Service office in Peachtree City, in its Sunday, Aug. 16 Area Forecast Discussion (issued 3:37 a.m. EDT), says oppressive heat will continue through early next week, with a Heat Advisory in effect through Monday evening and additional heat headlines likely.

What NWS Atlanta is saying

Key messages from the AFDFFC package:

  • Heat remains the top short-term story. The advisory is extended through 8 p.m. Monday.
  • Monday air temperatures are expected well into the upper 90s, with some areas likely to hit triple digits. Heat indexes are forecast to surge into the 105–110 range across much of the forecast area.
  • A front and moisture-convergence setup could produce focused thunderstorms that skirt far northern Georgia Monday afternoon and evening. A Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) covers northern Georgia, with a Slight Risk (Level 2) brushing the far northern counties. The primary severe threat is damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph.
  • Isolated to scattered afternoon storms remain possible each day, with gusty winds and locally heavy rain the main everyday threats.

NWS preliminary point guidance in the same discussion puts Atlanta near 96°F Sunday / 98°F Monday, with only thin overnight relief.

How local desks frame Monday

WSB-TV’s Monday heat package says a heat advisory is again in place for almost all of Georgia except the northeast Georgia mountain counties, running noon to 8 p.m., with dangerous heat indexes up to 109 degrees. The same report notes an Extreme Heat Warning for Randolph and Cleburne counties in Alabama in the Channel 2 viewing area, with indexes up to 113.

Atlanta News First’s First Alert desk, updated Aug. 16, calls Monday the hottest day of the week for most of north Georgia, with upper-90s air temperatures and heat indexes 105–110, and the same far-north storm corridor driven by a weak front and mid-level system into the Tennessee Valley and Appalachians.
